Background of the Study

Geriatric nursing is a specialized field that focuses on the care and management of older adults, who are often affected by multiple chronic conditions, cognitive impairments, and functional limitations (Aliyu et al., 2023). The elderly population in Jigawa State is experiencing growth, with an increasing demand for specialized healthcare services. Geriatric nurses are critical in improving the quality of life for older adults by providing holistic care that includes managing physical and emotional well-being, coordinating care, and addressing the unique needs of aging individuals.

Despite the importance of geriatric nursing, there is limited research on its impact on the elderly population in Jigawa State. This study seeks to appraise the role of geriatric nursing in enhancing the quality of life for older adults in the state, examining the contributions of geriatric nurses in promoting physical, mental, and social well-being.

Statement of the Problem

The elderly population in Jigawa State faces various health challenges that affect their quality of life, including chronic illnesses, disabilities, and isolation. Geriatric nursing is crucial in addressing these challenges, but the effectiveness of geriatric nursing interventions has not been fully explored. This study aims to evaluate the role of geriatric nursing in improving the quality of life of older adults in Jigawa State, with a focus on assessing patient outcomes and identifying areas where geriatric nursing practices can be enhanced.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To evaluate the role of geriatric nursing in improving the physical health of older adults in Jigawa State.

  2. To assess the impact of geriatric nursing on the mental and emotional well-being of elderly individuals in Jigawa State.

  3. To identify the challenges faced by geriatric nurses in providing care to elderly individuals and recommend strategies to enhance geriatric nursing services.

Research Questions

  1. How does geriatric nursing contribute to improving the physical health of older adults in Jigawa State?

  2. What impact does geriatric nursing have on the mental and emotional well-being of elderly individuals in Jigawa State?

  3. What are the challenges faced by geriatric nurses in caring for elderly patients in Jigawa State, and how can these challenges be overcome?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Geriatric nursing significantly improves the physical health and quality of life of elderly individuals in Jigawa State.

  2. Geriatric nursing contributes to improved mental and emotional well-being among elderly patients in Jigawa State.

  3. Challenges such as insufficient training, lack of resources, and high workload hinder the effectiveness of geriatric nursing in Jigawa State.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on geriatric nursing practices in urban and rural healthcare settings within Jigawa State. Limitations include the potential difficulty in accessing data from private healthcare providers and the variability in the availability of geriatric nursing services.
